Masters of the fiddle, guitar, bass and drum — The Barley Jacks meld their divergent backgrounds of blues and bluegrass, classical and Celtic, R & B and bebop — and inspire each other to create something entirely new. Their third and latest album Coming Down the Mountain is a project from a band that has come into its own — at once mature, confident and innovative.
Virtuosity, magic, and a little danger combine to make every performance by The Barley Jacks unique. Audiences are struck with how much fun the band has when they perform. These Minnesota–based veterans of years in the musical trenches enjoy making music together so much that they sometimes giggle like little kids!
The Barley Jacks are:
Brian Wicklund – fiddle, mandolin, vocals
Mike Cramer – guitar, vocals
Joel Arpin – drums, percussion, banjo
Keith Yanes – bass
AJ Srubas and Rina Rossi front the Midwest-based old-time/bluegrass project Steam Machine. As an old-time player, AJ has won ribbons three times in both fiddle and band competitions at the Appalachian String Band Music Festival, one of the country’s premier old-time events, and performed and taught nationally and internationally for over a decade. Rina first came to old time music as a clogger and then square dance caller, performing across the midwest and Europe with the Wild Goose Chase Cloggers. She later took up bass and guitar and has quickly become known for her rock solid backup rhythm and straight ahead singing. While not purists, Steam Machine does listen closely to the “old stuff” and strives to capture the essence of what makes these tunes and songs special, as they hear it, aspiring to keep midwest style old time bluegrass music alive and well wherever they go.
