Dylan Hicks & Small Screens play exploratory pop with literary ambitions and far-flung musical influences including jazz, R&B, freely improvised music, and various song traditions. They return to The Parkway stage to celebrate their second album, Modern Flora, a lush set of songs and instrumentals collaboratively arranged for nonet (nine voices and instruments).
Along with Dylan Hicks on piano and vocals, Small Screens features Christopher Thomson, saxophone; Michelle Kinney, cello; Zacc Harris, guitar; Dan Carpel, bass; and Peter Hennig, drums. For this special night they will also be joined by Bryan Murray, saxophone; Elaine Burt, trumpet; and JC Sanford, trombone.
Modern Flora, the sophomore release from acclaimed sextet Dylan Hicks & Small Screens, is a collection of lush songs and instrumentals. The free-ranging pop ensemble’s 2022 debut album, Airport Sparrows, was called “ambitious and elegant” by the Star Tribune.
Dylan Hicks was born in 1970 in Austin, Texas, and has lived since 1983 in Minneapolis. In addition to Small Screens, his musical projects include Munson-Hicks Party Supplies, a collaboration with the singer, bassist, and producer John Munson. Hicks has also written two novels published by Coffee House Press — Boarded Windows and Amateurs — as well as criticism, essays, journalism, and word puzzles for the Village Voice, the New York Times, the New England Review, Slate, the Guardian, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Paris Review Daily, and other publications.
