Once labeled “the girl with Patsy Cline’s voice,” Janie Miller presents her Original Tribute to Patsy Cline. Known for her remarkable resemblance to Patsy Cline’s voice, Janie recreates the essence of the 1950-1960s Nashville era with her captivating performances. 

After a long hiatus from the stage, Janie returns to The Parkway with a new band, singing a selection of Patsy Cline’s well-known hits and lesser-known gems. In full costume, Janie Miller embodies the spirit of Patsy Cline with an effortless grace that comes alive when she takes the stage. Close your eyes and expect to be transported to a heartwarming, classic time. 

Opening the night is local troubadour and his band, James Eugene Russell & His Enablers.

Considered one of the best country singers in the Twin Cities, Janie Miller has been performing nationally since 1988. Her full and gorgeous voice has been applied to pop, country, rock, and classic lounge as well as session work for commercial projects. It is Miller’s voice that bears similarity to Patsy Cline, sharing the artist’s subtlety of phrasing and power in tone. In a calendar full of “tributes,” this show is beyond running through the repertoire—Miller knows her Cline. She’s studied country’s first female crossover star and portrayed Cline in a musical production at The Plymouth Playhouse. More than 61 years after Cline’s tragic death, this is the closest you will get to the real deal.

Miller’s band includes Bob “Bobby E” Ekstrand on guitar, Rebecca Hanten on drums, Joe Savage on pedal steel, and Erik Lillestol on bass.

For most of his twenties, Minnesota musician James Eugene Russell spent his days zigzagging the country in various vans playing in hard-working punk bands like Cadillac Blindside, The Book of Dead Names, and The Cardinal Sin. He then began exploring new sounds with his country rock outfit, Prairie Sons. After Prairie Sons disbanded, James spent over a decade absent from the music scene dealing with alcoholism, becoming a father, and finally finding sobriety.

His first release as a solo artist, As/Is, showcases a collection of four songs that suggest James has a much clearer head and a lot to get off his chest. They are four of the many songs that James picked and penned out while on the couch during the past ten years, and having no idea on how they would ever come to fruition. This past decade’s struggles have shaped James into the introspective and mature singer/songwriter that he is today, making songs that shine stripped down solo, as well as with a band. Drawing from the venerable classic country music genre as well as his own punk rock narrative, James Eugene Russell melds all of his life experience into a sound that he describes as “country midwestern.” As/Is is a truthful, gut-wrenching journey through his last decade of change.
