Minneapolis music icon Mark Mallman celebrates the release of his 11th album, Magic Time, out June 27 on Hygh Tension Records/Virgin Music Group! Described as a “paranormal concept record,” Mallman will perform songs from the new release, as well as much-loved classics spanning his outstanding 25-year career — along with very special guests.
Considered one of indie rock’s (and now TikTok’s) legendary personas, Mark Mallman has built a reputation as a kind of musical urban myth, known for performance art feats that straddle the laws of what’s humanly possible, channeling stream-of-consciousness improvisations into finely-crafted Glam and New Wave sounds.
Among his many notable projects, Mallman has written music for Rick and Morty on Cartoon Network, ABC’s General Hospital, and The Morning Show on Apple+, scored the zombie web series Bite Me 2 with Dick Valentine of Electric Six, and composed for major motion picture trailers. His explosive stage presence and nonstop output earned him features in NME, Wired, Pitchfork, and on NPR. He’s honored with a star on the Minneapolis-famous First Avenue nightclub, where he’s been repeatedly named one of the Midwest’s best live performers. Though earlier versions existed, Mallman’s Marathon 3 in 2010 marked a turning point — a 78-hour song performed with 100 musicians that earned him a commemorative day from the City of St. Paul. Two years later, he completed Marathon IV: Road Rogue — an eight-day, 180-hour nonstop performance streamed live from a van crossing the U.S., using biometric gear to create music from his brainwaves during sleep.
His extensive catalog blends joy, resilience, and radical hope, with collaborations across indie rock, punk, and orchestral pop. His 2021 album Happiness accompanied his memoir The Happiness Playlist, a critically-praised account of overcoming panic attacks by listening only to uplifting music. In Music Theory for Dummies, he writes: “Theory is the tool to get you where you want to go. Just remember, you're the boss of your music.”
Then came lockdown 2020. Mallman reshaped himself as a storyteller for the world of TikTok, becoming one of the platform’s most popular music historians. Millions have viewed his 1000+ videos. Now, with his 11th album Magic Time, Mallman returns to his roots — and his ghosts. A supernatural concept record chronicling the weird, gritty, and mythic reality of van life, it blends horror imagery and cryptid folklore into a haunted mixtape of ghost stories and sonic spells. “To me, singing is a form of channeling. You method act the song... every performance is a type of exorcism.”
After three decades of fearless reinvention, Mallman continues to redefine the boundaries of music, performance, and storytelling. Songwriter. Writer. Music Historian. What’s Next? Magic Time!
