A not-to-be-missed night of New Orleans-style jazz with Madison’s Mama Digdown’s Brass Band — one of the hottest and hardest hitting brass bands on the scene today — along with the funky Neo-soul sounds of the Akie Bermiss Trio, featuring the Brooklyn-based keyboardist, singer & composer for Lake Street Dive. Rounding out the night is comedian extraordinaire, Trish Cook!
Mama Digdown's career has taken them to clubs, concert halls and festivals around the world. Conceived of closer to the headwaters than to the Mississippi Delta, Mama Digdown’s was born amidst the fertile decade of the New Orleans brass band revival of the early 1980s to the early 1990s - a decade that also produced the Rebirth Brass Band, Soul Rebels and the Hot 8 Brass Band. Respected around the world as one of the best purveyors of second line brass music, the band celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The band has released nine albums and have penned a number of songs that have found their way into the New Orleans brass band cannon.
Akie Bermiss lives in Brooklyn where he was raised in a musical household full of jazz and politics, fueled by his former-activist mom and dad. He began singing in church, moved it to school for a while, enroute becoming somewhat of a musical chameleon. His raucous, guttural and soulful vocals are a delectable fusion of Donny Hathaway and Tom Waits. He’s equally adept singing Neo-soul, funk, contemporary jazz, alternative rock, and hip hop.
Akie sings and plays keyboards with Lake Street Dive and contributed a number of compositions to the band's most recent album entitled, Obviously. Additionally, Akie is a member of the rich Neo-soul scene in Brooklyn, often performing with Aabaraki, the Screaming Headless Torsos, Miri Ben-Ari (the hip hop violinist) and rap sensation Soul Khan. In 2014, he released his first self-titled solo EP (via Rockwood Records).
