Mixed Company: Composition, Improvisation and Place calls sounds, images and texts to a game of maneuvering all at once. Sensing, learning, knowing and teaching are embodied and exercised as an invitation to a looking-at and a hearing. Theory worked-out on a heavy bag. Aesthetic experience and the potentially indifferent.

Bill Cottman, photographer, writer, projectionist and author of Surface Tensions, DISTURBANCEs, EMERGENCEs & NORTHSIDE365. Projecting literal and abstract imagery collected around a North Minneapolis narrative and mixed live in your presence and the ambient created by No Territory Band. More info at www.billcottman.com

Davu Seru, composer, musician, professor and author of Sights, Sounds Soul: The Twin Cities Through the Lens of Charles Chamblis (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2017). More info at www.davuseru.com

No Territory Band features Scott Fultz, saxophones, JC Sanford, trombone, Pat O’Keefe, clarinets, Jake Baldwin, trumpet, Nathan Hanson, saxophones, and Levi Schwartzberg, vibraphone and Davu Seru on drums performing Seru’s original compositions; works that play self-consciously in blues, African polyrhythm, and chorale-like arrangements for horns. But, as improvisers, ensemble members are free to treat idiom, form, and score as rules meant to be broken.
