Quintessential American rock band The Silos celebrate their 40-year anniversary, joined by acclaimed Minneapolis musician & songwriter Jonathan Rundman! Rundman, who has been a touring and recording member of The Silos for the past decade, opens the night in support of his new solo album, Waves.

The Silos are an American rock band formed in 1985 amidst New York City’s post-punk scene. “The band's austere style inflects the astringent twang of The Velvet Underground with the drone of R.E.M. and adds countryish echoes that recall Gram Parsons” (New York Times).

Bandleader Walter Salas-Humara, whose vision has been the band’s core from its inception, continues to guide the group as a wide-ranging musical collective which will tour the US and Europe in 2025. Originally from Florida, Salas-Humara moved to New York City in 1982 where he crafted a sound that blended rock, folk, punk, and downtown New York City vibes, earning The Silos a place as pioneers in the burgeoning indie music scene.

Their debut album, About Her Steps (1985), gained attention for its raw, heartfelt storytelling, but it was their 1987 release, Cuba, that put them on the map. The album, often regarded as a classic, drew critical praise and was named one of the best albums of the 1980s by Rolling Stone for its mix of poetic lyrics and layered, guitar-driven sound. Salas-Humara’s songwriting on Cuba showcased his ability to capture vivid images of American life, drawing comparisons to Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. In the 1990s, Salas-Humara turned The Silos into a continuously evolving project. Under his leadership, the band experimented with new sounds and went through various lineup changes, each bringing fresh influences. His work with The Silos has always reflected a balance of emotional storytelling and innovative sound, keeping the band relevant in an ever-evolving music landscape.

Minneapolis-based folk/rock songwriter Jonathan Rundman returns this Spring with Waves, his first album of new original songs since 2015. Upon the album’s release in April, Rundman will embark as the opening act for the Midwest dates of The Silos 40th Anniversary Tour, and then will join The Silos as keyboardist for the headlining set.

Throughout Waves, Rundman’s songwriting stretches from anthemic heartland rock to garagey experimentation, ultra-melodic power pop to rockabilly, atmospheric dreamscapes to Stonesy swagger, and even traditional folk instrumentation from Finland and Mexico. Two of the album’s most striking songs are character-driven compositions that Rundman co-wrote with Walter Salas-Humara of The Silos: “Elizabeth, Don’t Waste Your Breath” is a soaring pop jam, and “Diner By The Train” (previously recorded by Salas-Humara on his 2016 album Explodes and Disappears) is a cinematic folk masterwork, hailed by Rolling Stone magazine in Germany:

★★★ ½

“What remains? The ‘Diner by the Train,’ …the evocation of history is hardly nostalgic, but rather the sober realization that we are lost without it.”
