A beautiful and inspiring evening of music by three Minnesota music-makers — AirLands, anni xo, and Mike Kota — who come together with a shared vision of a Minnesota where all immigrant families live without fear, children dream freely, and communities stand united in their pursuit of justice and their own right to thrive, for the benefit of future generations.
Proceeds to support Immigrant Defense Network (IDN), a growing statewide network of 90+ immigrant, labor, legal, faith, and community organizations dedicated to protecting and advancing the constitutional rights of immigrant communities across Minnesota.
AirLands is the independent rock project of Kevin Calaba (stars of track and field), Dan Lawonn (Jeremy Messersmith, Pink Nightmare), Eric Julio Carranza (PRINTS, Jest, Molly Brandt) and Scott McPherson (Elliot Smith, She and Him, Mason Jennings). Calaba most recently recorded Strange Beast, a 10-song album with Brett Bullion, featuring a stark departure from his previous works, opting for more spacious arrangements, experimental tones, and voicings. The songwriting takes cues from the likes of Radiohead, Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, and Death Cab for Cutie, but is also certainly its own thing. The musicians making up AirLands are a force unto themselves, creating powerful, insightful, and soaring indie rock.
anni xo (they/them) is a young queer musician hailing from Minnesota who found solace in music as a means to explore their identity and embrace the complexities of life. Inspired by the likes of boygenius, Annie DiRusso, and Dora Jar, anni's music is a refreshing blend of alternative songwriting and pop stylings that expertly convey themes of love, loss, and the struggles of youth in a post-modern landscape. Onstage, anni xo is joined by a talented ensemble of musicians, including Maddie Thies (any pronouns) on bass guitar, Riley Jacobson (he/him) on electric guitar, Aurelio Sandoval (he/him) on drums, and Hunter SinClair Hawthorne (he/him) on keys and production.
Mike Kota is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Minneapolis. Her thoughtful lyrics and soulful melodies bring about introspection and empowerment. Her distinctive voice appears as a silver-lining of hope in a haunting storm of sound and feeling. Aided by her rock-influenced guitar, Mike's songs shed a healing light on dark vulnerabilities in a raw and powerful performance.
