The Center for the Art of Medicine at the University of Minnesota (CFAM) presents The Art of Medicine: Lines We Hold, Lines We Cross, an evening of storytelling and live music by healthcare workers in Minneapolis.  Storytelling direction provided by CFAM and Story Arts of Minnesota, with additional storytelling development by the Nocturnists. This year’s show features stories from Sarah Auna, Scott Biggerstaff, Shika Kalevor, Morgan McBride, Megan Mensinger, Colin Turner, and Margot Zarin-Pass — along with music by the Ari Nahum Trio.

The Center for the Art of Medicine (CFAM) is part of the University of Minnesota Medical School. CFAM is a consortium of medical humanities practitioners led by physicians Ben Trappey, Maren Olson, Tseganesh Selameab, Anthony Williams, and Jon Hallberg. CFAM sponsors a robust Storytelling in Medicine Program and also includes Hippocrates Cafe Productions, which creates the two-time Emmy award-winning public television series, Art+Medicine. The CFAM team is also engaged in research on the impact of the humanities in medicine.

CFAM’s work focuses on medical students, resident physicians, and practicing physicians and others in health care. CFAM strives to cultivate creativity and to elevate the role of the arts and humanities in medical education and practice, in order to nurture curiosity and creativity, promote diversity, deepen empathy, develop professionalism, and foster resilience in physicians and physicians-in-training.

CFAM is partnering with Story Arts of Minnesota (SAM) to provide story coaching and direction for this show. SAM is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the art of storytelling in its traditional and contemporary forms and to developing and supporting storytellers at all levels. SAM member-volunteers engage in a range of activities, including: an annual all-day “StoryFest” of performances, workshops, and networking that’s free and open to the public; a monthly storytelling open mic; a monthly Saturday morning story hour for kids and families; and an annual Tellabration! group story concert. SAM’s website (storyartsmn.org) points to events around the state, profiles professional tellers, lists classes and workshops, and more. In addition to its own productions, SAM partners with other organizations such as theaters, museums, and businesses to curate and promote storytelling performances. Membership in SAM is open to everyone who imagines a society in which storytellers are recognized for providing a relevant, inspiring, and transformative service through the art and craft of spoken narrative—or more simply, to everyone who loves a good story!

Music will be provided by the Ari Nahum Trio. The Ari Nahum Trio is an eclectic musical trio in its second decade of life, formed when pianist and aspiring doctor Ari Nahum met his medical school professor and bassist Dr. Jim Pacala in 2009. Tonight they will be joined by relative newcomer to the group drummer Ken Goldman. The group explores a wide range of musical landscapes, including straight ahead jazz, reworking pop and folk tunes, and original compositions.
